Your self-catering holiday cottage sits in the heart of Teesdale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and one of England’s best-kept secrets. Not as busy as the Yorkshire Dales, but equally gorgeous, Teesdale comes with its own set of unique charms.
High Force Waterfall
England’s highest waterfall, High Force is just five minutes away by car. Watch the River Tees plunge 70 feet over an almost-vertical cliff edge.

Low Force Waterfall
Park at the Bowlees Visitor Centre and take the path upstream past Low Force and High Force. Or just pack a picnic and watch the water tumble over the Whin Sill. Have fun on the famous Wynch Bridge.
Kirkcarrion
Just a couple of miles away, Kirkcarrion is an iconic sight in Teesdale. Brave the reputed Bronze-Age burial chamber and be rewarded with fine views over Lunedale and Teesdale.

Gibson’s Cave and Summerhill Force
Gibson was an outlaw who hid from the police in the cave behind stunning Summerhill Force. There’s a family-friendly half-mile walk from the Bowlees Visitor Centre (nice café) to the falls.
The Tees Railway Path
Right out of the door, you can walk the Tees Railway Path. It’s a disused train line that takes you to Middleton-in-Teesdale in one direction and delightful Romaldkirk and Cotherstone in the other. Easy, flat walking with great views.

Local Pubs
Pick from two great pubs in the village. The Crown is just a few steps from the door and serves delicious food and drink. The Blacksmith’s Arms is a friendly place just over the road serving craft and traditional ales, ciders and malt whiskies. Or walk the railway path and refuel over lunch at Romaldkirk’s Rose and Crown. Note that Mickleton community centre is also a hive of activity, with frequent live music and cinema nights.
Market Towns
If ancient market towns are your thing, you’ll love a potter around Barnard Castle and Middleton-in-Teesdale.
